Nominations for Council Members

What’s a Congregation Council Member?

Our church constitution shares that:

CHAPTER 12
CONGREGATION COUNCIL
C12.01. The voting membership of the Congregation Council shall consist of the pastor(s), the officers of the congregation, and twelve members of the congregation, at least one of whom shall be a youth and at least one of whom shall be a young adult. Any voting member of the congregation may be elected, subject only to the limitation on the length of continuous service permitted in that office. A member’s place on the Congregation Council shall be declared vacant if the member a) ceases to be a voting member of this congregation or b) is absent from four successive regular meetings of the Congregation Council without cause. Consistent with the laws of the state in which this congregation is incorporated, the congregation may adopt procedures for the removal of a member of the Congregation Council in other circumstances.
C12.02. The members of the Congregation Council except the pastor(s) shall be elected by written ballot to serve for three years or until their successors are elected. Such members shall be eligible to serve no more than two full terms consecutively. Their terms shall begin at the close of the annual meeting at which they are elected.

But perhaps more concisely—a person

  • Must be a member of St. John Lutheran Church
  • Should attend worship services on a regular basis (so that he/she is informed about the life and ministry of the congregation)
  • Be willing to attend Council Meetings, which are held 10-11 times a year, on the second Wednesday night of the month, and attend any special-called meetings
  • Serve as a liaison for Council on one of the standing committees of the church
  • Be familiar with the church’s constitution

If you would like to serve on Council, we would love to hear from you!  Please complete a Nominations Form (copies are in the Great Room, or available here as a link), and return to the Church Office by Sunday, Oct. 29.

If you have questions about serving on Council, you may speak to any of our Nominating Committee members.  They are:  Larry Erdman (Chair), Cheryl Quinty, MaryEllen Scheffey, Jeff Brown, Carol Weidler, Paul Linton, and Joyce Gilpin (Scribe).

Thank you for prayerfully considering this wonderful opportunity to serve our St. John community!
